Engagement rate measures what percentage of your audience actually interacts with your posts, instead of just passively following you. It's the metric brands look at most closely today when choosing which creators to work with — often ahead of raw follower count.
How it's calculated
The most common formula is:
(likes + comments + saves) / followers × 100
Some brands use reach instead of followers as the denominator, which tends to give a more accurate picture if your content also reaches people who don't follow you yet.
What counts as a good rate
It varies a lot by account size: small accounts (nano and micro influencers) tend to have higher rates (3-8%) because their community is closer-knit, while large accounts usually trend lower (1-3%) simply due to audience volume. A steady rate sustained over time matters more than a one-off spike from a single viral video.
For a brand, a high engagement rate usually correlates with better brand recall and real conversions, which is why many use it as their main input when setting a rate card or evaluating a collaboration's ROI.
