Modelo 130 for Influencers: How to Calculate Quarterly IRPF

Oct 10, 2026

Modelo 130 is the quarterly advance payment of personal income tax (IRPF) that self-employed professionals under Spain's direct estimation regime must file — including most instagramers and content creators who invoice brands and agencies. It means advancing 20% of your accumulated net income for the year to the Spanish tax agency, minus withholdings already applied and payments made in previous quarters. For 2026, the deadlines are April 20, July 20, October 20, and January 30, 2027 for the fourth quarter.

Who must file it (and who can be exempt)

If you work as a self-employed professional (autónomo) under normal or simplified direct estimation — the usual regime for an instagramer or creator invoicing for campaigns, affiliate deals or sponsored content in Spain — you must file modelo 130 every quarter, even if the result is zero. The only way to be exempt is if more than 70% of last year's income came from invoices carrying an IRPF withholding, which is common when you work almost exclusively with agencies or brands acting as payers.

Calculating the 20% quarterly payment: a practical example

The calculation is cumulative from January 1st, not isolated quarter by quarter:

  1. Add up all taxable income for the year (brand invoices, affiliate income, valued gifts, etc.).
  2. Subtract deductible business expenses.
  3. Apply 20% to that accumulated net income.
  4. Deduct withholdings already applied to your invoices and payments already made in previous quarters.

Example: if you invoiced €18,000 in the first half of the year with €4,000 in deductible expenses, your net income is €14,000. 20% of that is €2,800. If €900 was already withheld on agency invoices and you paid €600 in Q1, you'd pay €1,300 in Q2.

The 15% (or 7%) withholding brands and agencies must apply

When you invoice a company, another freelancer or an agency, the invoice must include an IRPF withholding: 15% as the general rate, or a reduced 7% during your first year as self-employed and the following two. The payer deposits that withholding directly with the tax agency on your behalf, and it's deducted both from modelo 130 and your annual tax return. No withholding applies when you invoice individuals or foreign brands without a permanent establishment in Spain — which directly affects that 70% threshold that exempts you from filing.

Modelo 130 deadlines in 2026

| Quarter | Period | Filing deadline | |---|---|---| | Q1 | January-March | April 1-20, 2026 | | Q2 | April-June | July 1-20, 2026 | | Q3 | July-September | October 1-20, 2026 | | Q4 | October-December | January 1-30, 2027 |

Keep invoices and payments organized to avoid quarterly surprises

Calculating modelo 130 correctly means knowing at all times which invoices you've issued, which carry withholding, and which have actually been paid. When you juggle several brands and agencies at once, tracking this by hand in a spreadsheet is easy to get wrong. With Influx you can prepare each invoice's data for your accountant with estimated VAT and IRPF and see at a glance what's been paid and what's still pending, plus check your quarter-by-quarter income trend to anticipate how much you'll owe before the deadline arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to count brand gifts in modelo 130? Yes. If you receive products or services in exchange for content, the tax agency treats them as income in kind, and they must be added to your accumulated net income even if no cash changed hands.

What happens if the modelo 130 result is zero or negative? You still have to file it on time, even if you owe nothing. Failing to file, even with a zero result, can trigger a request from the tax agency.

Will agencies always apply withholding to my payments? If the agency or brand acts as a company or professional, yes — it must apply withholding to your invoice (15%, or 7% if you're a new self-employed professional). No withholding applies if you invoice an individual or a foreign company without a permanent establishment in Spain.

Can I file modelo 130 late without consequences? No. Late filing triggers surcharges starting at 1% per month of delay during the first year, so it's worth keeping each quarter's deadline on your radar.
